As a producer & audio engineer, Mr. Pérez enjoys vision-casting projects with other artists and his students with the aim to create uncharted, heartfelt music. His equation of musical genres to a masterful puzzle-art mural compels him to search for the missing puzzle pieces of music that are yet to be placed within the mural of reconnoitered music. In 2015, Mr. Pérez collaborated with Dr. José Valentino to find one of the missing puzzle pieces of uncharted, heartfelt music, by serving as the record producer for the album - José Valentino Ruiz & The Latin Jazz Ensemble featuring Giovanni Hidalgo "I Make You Want To Move" – that was nominated for a 16th Annual Latin-GRAMMY® Award for Best Latin Jazz Album.
In 2016, Mr. Pérez went on to co-produce Zohet’s album, “Viento de Revelación” which translates Wind of Revelation - Zohet is a guitar (performed by Feliche Del Valle) and flute duo that performs world-music adaptations of Christian hymns as well as original compositions with tinges of Asian and Middle Eastern nuances imbedded within their melodies.
That same year, Mr. Pérez embarked in the creation of a bold album as audio engineer and co-arranger with iconic flutist, Jim Walker (co-arranger and artist), and Dr. José Valentino (composer and artist) entitled “We Are One: An Exploration of Latin American Music." This album and play-along book caught the viral attention of flutists around the world, which allotted them the opportunity to world-premier their music as headliners for both Florida Flute Association and National Flute Association conventions. To date, Mr. Pérez has nine published albums to his credit as record producer and engineer.
As an arranger, Mr. Pérez is known for his eclecticism and adaptability to fit virtually any style of music into many ensemble configurations including string quartet, chamber strings, large jazz ensembles, orchestras, flute choirs, jazz combos, and commercial music ensembles.
Mr. Pérez is the first-call arranger for Jim Walker and Dr. José Valentino; together, they have created music that garnered the enthusiasm of prestigious music conventions and their attendees. Most recently, Mr. Pérez was commissioned to arrange and adapt “Cuban Cha Cha” (from the We Are One project) for Lee University’s Large Jazz Ensemble, which was premiered in October 21, 2016 in conjunction with the Performing Artists Series featuring Jim Walker and Dr. José Valentino, and Mr. Pérez on Latin percussion and flute.
In December 14, 2016, his arrangement an adaption of “We Are One” for the acclaimed Latin jazz big band, CALIENTE with director and 50th Annual GRAMMY® Award nominated music educator, José Antonio Diaz, was premiered at The Midwest Clinic in Chicago, IL.
As a performer, Mr. Pérez’s desire to express his musicianship as a crossover flutist (i.e., western art and classical, jazz, Latin music, commercial music) is fueled by the desire to share his message of hope and love with as many people as possible. His orchestral profession includes the roles of Principal flutist for South Shore Symphony Orchestra and 2nd Flutist and Piccoloist for Philharmonic Orchestra of Puerto Rico. During his tenure with both orchestras, Mr. Pérez participated in the film score of "Of Fortune and Gold." Some of his most-treasured highlights was performing in pops concerts of Disney and Pixar music with Puerto Rican Philharmonic Orchestra, which was broadcasted internationally.
As a commercial, jazz, and Latin jazz flutist & percussionist, Mr. Pérez has performed at 2015 Low Country Jazz Festival, Springhill Symphony Hall in Massachusetts, 2017 National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM Show), National Flute Association Convention’s cabaret, Florida Flute Association’s cabaret (2x), Heineken Jazz Festival, Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium, Lee University, University of South Florida, and so forth. Between 2015 & 2016, Mr. Pérez won 10 awards for the 38th & 39th Annual Downbeat Student Music Awards – including Winner for Best Latin Group, Best Blues/Pop/Rock group, Best Small Jazz Group. Furthermore, he has performed with acclaimed musicians such as percussionist and drummer Alex Acuña, pianist Bruno Miranda, saxophonist Jeff Kashiwa, and trumpeter Charlie Sepúlveda.
His yearning passion for education and inspiring music students is evident, so much so that in November 2015, Mr. Pérez was recruited by internationally-acclaimed flute makers, Trevor James Flutes, to become an endorsing artist and touring clinician to educate music students on arranging, improvisation, extended techniques, and versatile performance strategies. Mr. Pérez has worked as a Graduate Teaching Fellow at University of South Florida coaching various flute ensembles and commercial music ensembles.
Mr. Pérez worked as a Graduate Teaching Fellow at Stony Brook University where he coached the jazz combo using his unique arrangements adapted for saxophone, drums, piano, guitar and bass. Academically, Mr. Pérez holds a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance degree from El Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico under the tutelage of Josue Casillas, and a Master of Music in Flute Performance degree with a cognate in Music Industry from University of South Florida under the nurturing of Dr. Kim McCormick. Mr. Pérez is on path to graduate with a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance degree, concentrations in both Classical and Jazz, in 2019 from Stony Brook University under the guidance of flute professor, Carol Wincenc, and jazz professor, Ray Anderson.
